In the middle ear a surgical process is carried out to remove mastoid air cells in order to treat cholesteatoma which is an unusual but non-cancerous growth in the middle ear.
What if I leave it untreated?
Any form of infection, if not treated may spread to other parts of the body causing further health issues. In case of cholesteatoma or skin cyst, if not removed may become infectious and may lead to problems like:
- Facial Palsy or compression of facial nerve
- Ear drainage
How long is the procedure?
The procedure only takes a couple of hour and can be done at the day care. You need not to get admitted overnight for an MRM surgery.
A small incision in the ear to reach the middle ear & remove the mastoid air cells to avoid any infection is made by the doctor. Only the affected areas are removed, the posterior & superior canal wall of the ear is kept intact. The objective is to recreate the area in order to retain normal hearing.
